What Is Soy Isoflavone?

Soy isoflavone is a phytoestrogen extracted from soybean germ. The primary active components are genistein, daidzein, and glycitein. Due to its structural similarity to human estrogen, soy isoflavone is commonly used in nutritional formulations for women’s health, bone health, and healthy aging support.

Are Soy Isoflavones Bad for the Thyroid?

Current research and applications suggest that soy isoflavones may affect thyroid function only at very high dosages or under specific laboratory conditions. In common dietary supplements, there is no consistent evidence that soy isoflavones trigger thyroid dysfunction.

People receiving treatment for thyroid dysfunction or those with chronic iodine deficiency should consult doctors before taking soy isoflavones.

What Are the Side Effects of Soy Isoflavone?

Digestive Reactions

Some people may experience mild digestive discomfort, like bloating and increased flatulence. These reactions are short-term and commonly related to individual differences in ingredient tolerance.

Hormone-Related Reactions

Soy isoflavone is a phytoestrogen, so some people may experience minor hormone-related changes when they take it at high doses or for extended periods. However, these reactions are uncommon at doses typically used for nutritional supplements.

Thyroid-Related Considerations

As mentioned above, people with thyroid dysfunction or insufficient iodine intake should be cautious when taking soy isoflavones. It is recommended to value their body’s well-being and consult a doctor before using products containing soy isoflavone.

Allergic Reactions

As soy isoflavone is extracted from soybeans, some people who are allergic to soybeans may experience allergic reactions like skin discomfort. However, this situation is very rare.

Red Clover Isoflavone vs Soy Isoflavone
ItemsRed clover isoflavoneSoy isoflavone
Raw materialRed clover extractsSoybean extracts
Active componentsBiochanin A, formononetin, and small amounts of genistein and daidzeinGenistein, daidzein, and glycitein
ApplicationsMenopause support, women’s hormonal balance, and mature women’s health productsWomen’s health, menopause support, bone health, cardiovascular health, antioxidant support, and healthy aging formulations
Common ingredient combinationsWomen’s health botanicals such as black cohosh and chasteberryCalcium, vitamin D, collagen, coenzyme Q10, and other healthy aging ingredients

Red clover isoflavones are more positioned for women’s hormonal health, while soy isoflavones feature a more comprehensive application range. You can choose suitable ingredients for your formulation according to your requirements.

If your products are more centered on menopause and hormone supplements, red clover isoflavone is a good choice. If your products aim for a broader range of applications, soy isoflavones have more advantages.

Exact Process of Soy Isoflavones

Soybean Inspection

Sunjoy uses premium soybean germ as the original material for soy isoflavones. When the germ enters, we first conduct incoming inspections to confirm that it meets our manufacturing requirements. Only qualified germ can proceed to subsequent manufacturing processes.

Ethanol Extraction

We use aqueous ethanol as the solvent to extract soy isoflavones from the germ. After extraction, we get the extract solution containing our target components. Ethanol recovery is also conducted to reduce residues and release the load of concentration and drying processes.

Concentration

We use physical technologies like pressure-reduced evaporation or vacuum concentration to remove the solvent and increase the assay ratio. Ethanol recovery is conducted to achieve higher stability and purity in the final soy isoflavone products.

Purification

Chromatography purification can isolate and concentrate the soy isoflavones. Impurities are removed at this stage. We conduct a secondary concentration process. Purification and concentration are important stages of assay and quality control. After these processes, the semi-product is ready for subsequent drying.

Drying and Powder Processing

Sunjoy adopts professional technologies in its product drying, such as spray drying and vacuum drying. Then the soy isoflavones are in a relatively stable powder form. After drying, we conduct pulverization, screening, and mixing to control consistent particle size and uniformity.

Testing and Packaging

In addition to soybean raw material inspection, we also conduct semi-finished and finished product testing. Multiple inspections closely monitor the manufacturing processes, ensuring quality-assured final soy isoflavone.

Our standard packaging is 25 kg fiber drums with double-liner plastic liners, providing full protection against product degradation. In addition to basic packaging, we also provide custom services tailored to your requirements.

How to Store Soy Isoflavones?

Keep Cool and Dry

Soy isoflavones should be kept in cool, dry places. If the humidity is high, soy isoflavone may absorb moisture and clump, affecting the powder flowability and effectiveness.

Protect from Light and Air

If soy isoflavone is exposed to light and air for too long, the stability of active ingredients can be affected. Keep it sealed, and you can reduce the risk of oxidation and maintain the active ingredient level. Original packaging or moisture-proof, well-sealed containers are recommended.

Avoid High Temperature

High-temperature environments may affect the physical state of soy isoflavones and the stability of active ingredients. Recommended storage temperature ranges from 15°C to 25°C.
